August 8 Odyssey Alcatraz Swim Canceled

This note most likely comes as no surprise due to the ongoing pandemic and health and safety concerns, but the 8/8 Odyssey Alcatraz has been canceled.

As with all recent swims, we have been monitoring conditions, working with local government, and seeking approval for swims from the US Coast Guard. Each Alcatraz swim during the pandemic must be given clearance from the United States Coast Guard.

While patiently awaiting better news, we unfortunately have come to the conclusion that the swim cannot be completed safely at this time. All participating swimmers should have received an email earlier today or will shortly.

Alcatraz swims require transportation to the entry point, which is just outside of Alcatraz island. During this time, swimmers are often in close proximity to each other, with around 70-150 athletes participating. Small, private Alcatraz swims and our other weekly events, which have social distancing measures in place, continue.

Despite this cancelation, there are still several exciting events that are coming up. We recently completed the 2020 Splash & Dash with a small group of entrants and will continue to make adjustments as needed. The following events are still scheduled but are subject to change based on safety concerns. Upcoming events include:

  • Alcatraz 10/24

  • Bridge to Bridge 8/29

  • Bay Bridge 9/19

Solo and small group Alcatraz swims remain an option if boats can manage the number of swimmers while safely following social distancing guidelines. Interested in organizing a solo or small group Alcatraz swim? Contact Odyssey today.
