The Community Answers “What is Something You Do That Other Swimmers Think is Weird?”

We all take a different approach to our favorite hobbies. We all also have quirks that no one else in the universe may have.

In our Ask the Community Series, we recently decided to celebrate “weird” by asking the open water swimming community to share something they do that others consider to be weird. Here are the fantastic responses we received:

Facebook

  • “If I am trying to acclimate to cold water swimming without a wetsuit (62 and below) I will do half to the majority of my swim in a wetsuit and the rest without.” - Courtney W.

  • “Swim without a wetsuit, not because I like the cold. Because I hate wetsuits!” - Melissa S.

  • “When I was a backstroker back in my pool swimming days, I would snort some of the pool water right before my race *just in case* I got an unexpected shot of it up the nose on the start. I didn’t want to be shocked by the sting.“ - Tiffany M.

  • “I count ALL my strokes…” - Ryan J.

  • “I don’t eat cake.” - Sarah P.M.

  • “Swim hungover (sometimes)” - Shon J.

  • “I sometimes wear my wetsuit while riding my bike to a swim so I get nice and toasty!” - Aaron Walz

  • “I carry my ID and cellphone in my swim buoy.” - Elise C.

Instagram

  • “Not swim in the open Bay from Alcatraz to San Francisco.” - @bayvoyager

  • “Using pool toys in open water, but only because the pools are either closed in SF or you can’t get a lane anywhere because of the pandemic!” - @cmw_in_the_360

  • “Me too! Feel like a dork with a kickboard in the ocean but it’s nice to just chill and kick sometimes!” - @pollyannacowgirl

  • “Swim without a wetsuit in the ocean.” - @redzombie

  • “Rarely gets warmer! Also doing the half workout in a wetsuit and the rest without!” - @cmw_in_the_360

  • “Swim breaststroke half the time I swim in the bay.” - @sonicboom1234
